January in Japan
January in Japan. I like the quiet hush that settles over the city at the beginning of the month. After literally ringing in the new year with 108 strikes of the temple bell, everyone holes up for a few days. Shops close. Offices shut down. And feasting with friends and family becomes the focus. But by the time we got back from our U.S. sojourn, the city was up and running again, most of the new year's decorations sadly discarded. I did have the good fortune to find this treasure still affixed to the front door of a martial arts studio in our neighborhood. Isn't it lovely?
